Why Detection Windows Matter

Different testing methods detect recent or historical drug use over different time frames:

  • Saliva (Oral Fluid) – detects very recent use and impairment, typically within hours.

  • Urine – detects past use and is the most common method in AS/NZS 4308-compliant workplace testing.

  • Blood – detects very recent use, generally used in incidents or confirmatory testing.

  • Hair – provides a long-term 90-day history, often used in more specialised situations.

Knowing these windows helps businesses choose the right type of test for their policy, industry and risk profile.
